Tonight, I met up with a few design friends and attended the Refresh Denver Meetup at Galvanize in Denver. Tonight's speakers were Todd Berger and Lucian Föhr, partners of Berger & Föhr design studio.
These gentlemen shared some of their most recent work, basic principles and rituals, but most importantly their new social media site called 'Ello' (currently in BETA). The premises of Ello is to help promote a true online community for artists, designers, tech-peers and the like, to share their work, their concepts, and how design and communication shapes our world in so many ways. Unlike the biggest, most popular social media sites out there (Facebook, Tumblr, etc.), which uses their users' data to sell to advertising companies, Ello does not contain any advertising, and your information stays between you and the friends you share it with. Currently, you can only join by invite. I just joined yesterday, and I'm interested in being involved with something that truly wants to focus on craft, creative minds, and what they have to say and share with the world in order to make it a better, more forward-thinking place. It would be cool to see Ello takes off, although I am curious about the future of its integrity as its prosperity evolves– whether it will have the ability to shift the way the world interacts with the internet or if it will become just like the other current social media sites that millions upon millions use. Either way, I hope it remains a safe-haven and genuine meeting place for those who are enthusiastically interested in changing the world in positive and creative ways. Good luck to Ello!
